If your 160GB iPod Classic simply isn’t capacious enough to hold your enormo catalogue of dubious EMO rock anthems then salvation could be at hand, because a bunch of scientists with brains bigger than their own heads have found a way to boost the memory of gadgets without bumping up their physical dimensions.

The tech is clever enough that future generation iPods — to take the obvious example — could store up to 150,000 times the number of songs they can hold now, estimated at around 300million. That’s an awful lot of Nickelback tunes.

So what’s the skinny? One word: nanotechnology. Researchers at Glasgow University have apparently created a miniscule switch that can squeeze up to one million gigabytes of memory onto an area one square inch in size. Compare that to the current max of 3.3gigabytes and you get the picture.

The molecular switch is controlled by taking nanoparticles a millionth of a millimetre in size and sticking them on a gold or carbon surface with amazing results, as the brilliantly named Dr Vin Dhanak explains, “This research shows the potential is there for your future iPod to have hundreds of thousand times more capacity to store music and video than is currently possible.”

He did also comment however that the team behind the tech now faced the challenge of “fabrication issues”, and we don’t think he’s talking about making up a story for the wife about why he’s out so late every night.
